The Iona Community and Sermon in Stone (DVD): Iona Community, George F. MacLeod The Iona Community and Sermon in Stone (DVD)
Iona Community, George F. MacLeod
R305 Discovery Miles 3 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This DVD contains two very informative films about the Iona Community, together with an update by its current leader, Kathy Galloway. "The Iona Community": "Today's Challenge, Tomorrow's Hope" was filmed in 200 and gives a good idea of life and work at the community's centres on Iona and at Camas, where hundreds of visitors are welcomed each year. It also portrays some of the organisation's activities on the mainland. "Sermon in Stone" was made during the 1960s and has not been widely available for some time. It includes film from the archives of the Iona Community and shows the reconstruction of Iona Abbey from the late 1930s until the end of the 1960s. George Macleod, the founder of the community, features prominently.

Differential Equations with Applications and Historical Notes (Paperback, 3rd edition): George F. Simmons Differential Equations with Applications and Historical Notes (Paperback, 3rd edition)
George F. Simmons
R1,462 Discovery Miles 14 620 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Fads are as common in mathematics as in any other human activity, and it is always difficult to separate the enduring from the ephemeral in the achievements of one's own time. An unfortunate effect of the predominance of fads is that if a student doesn't learn about such worthwhile topics as the wave equation, Gauss's hypergeometric function, the gamma function, and the basic problems of the calculus of variations-among others-as an undergraduate, then he/she is unlikely to do so later. The natural place for an informal acquaintance with such ideas is a leisurely introductory course on differential equations. Specially designed for just such a course, Differential Equations with Applications and Historical Notes takes great pleasure in the journey into the world of differential equations and their wide range of applications. The author-a highly respected educator-advocates a careful approach, using explicit explanation to ensure students fully comprehend the subject matter. With an emphasis on modeling and applications, the long-awaited Third Edition of this classic textbook presents a substantial new section on Gauss's bell curve and improves coverage of Fourier analysis, numerical methods, and linear algebra. Relating the development of mathematics to human activity-i.e., identifying why and how mathematics is used-the text includes a wealth of unique examples and exercises, as well as the author's distinctive historical notes, throughout. Provides an ideal text for a one- or two-semester introductory course on differential equations Emphasizes modeling and applications Presents a substantial new section on Gauss's bell curve Improves coverage of Fourier analysis, numerical methods, and linear algebra Relates the development of mathematics to human activity-i.e., identifying why and how mathematics is used Includes a wealth of unique examples and exercises, as well as the author's distinctive historical notes, throughout Uses explicit explanation to ensure students fully comprehend the subject matter Outstanding Academic Title of the Year, Choice magazine, American Library Association.

The Wall Street Journal once called him "perhaps the most powerful journalist in America." In this new collection, he examines a remarkably unsettling thirteen years in our nation's experience, from 2008 to 2020. Included are a number of columns about court cases, mostly from the Supreme Court, that illuminate why the composition of the federal judiciary has become such a contentious subject. Other topics addressed include the American Revolutionary War, historical figures from Frederick Douglass to JFK, as well as a scathing assessment of how State of the Union Addresses are delivered in the modern day. Mr. Will also offers his perspective on American socialists, anti-capitalist conservatives, drug policy, the criminal justice system, climatology, the Coronavirus, the First Amendment, parenting, meritocracy and education, China, fascism, authoritarianism, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, and the morality of enjoying football. In his classic tribute to America's pastime--now with a new introduction--political commentator, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, and lifelong sports enthusiast George F. Will travels from the baseball field to the dugout to the locker room to get to the root of the game we all love. He breaks down the sport to its four basic components, managing, pitching, hitting, and fielding, and analyzes the way four of its notables, manager Tony La Russa, pitcher Orel Hershiser, outfielder Tony Gwynn, and shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., approach the game. One of the most acclaimed sports books ever written, "Men at Work" is a revelatory, and often surprising, study of professional baseball.

George F Rhoades Jr, Vedat Sar
R1,818 Discovery Miles 18 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An international look at the similarities and differences of long-lasting trauma Trauma and Dissociation in a Cross-Cultural Perspective examines the psychological, sociological, political, economic, and cultural aspects of trauma and its consequences on people around the world. Dispelling the myth that trauma-related dissociative disorders are a North American phenomenon, this unique book travels through more than a dozen countries to analyze the effects of long-lasting traumatization-both natural and man-made-on adults and children. Working from theoretical and clinical perspectives, the field's leading experts address trauma in situations that range from the psychological effects of the Troubles in Northern Ireland to the emergence of Hikikomori, the phenomenon of social withdrawal in Japanese youth. Reactions to trauma can be both unique according to a person's culture and similar to the experiences of others around the world. Dissociation, intense grief, anger, and survivor's guilt are common responses as people split off mentally, physically, and emotionally from the source of the trauma, whether it's an act of nature (tsunami, earthquake, flood, etc.) or the trauma created by violence, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, assault, confinement, kidnapping, and war. Trauma and Dissociation in a Cross-Cultural Perspective examines the efforts of clinicians and researchers in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Australia, and New Zealand to develop sociopsychological methods of providing counseling to people who are suffering physically, emotionally and spiritually, training for professionals counted on to dispense that counseling, and economic and political solutions that might help to limit the devastating effects of natural disasters. Trauma and Dissociation in a Cross-Cultural Perspective examines: the tensions between the National Health Service and the private sector in the United Kingdom how the Mandarin version of the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) is used in China Djinnai, a culture-bound syndrome and possession trance disorder found in Iran how colonialism has transmitted trauma to the Maori people of New Zealand transgenerational trauma in Turkey religious rituals and spirit possession in the Philippines memory wars in Israel traumatic syndromes among the French differences in dissociative experiences among Chinese and Japanese youth childhood trauma in Argentina and much more Trauma and Dissociation in a Cross-Cultural Perspective is an enlightening professional resource for anyone working in psychology, sociology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy.

Advances in Cancer Research provides invaluable information on the exciting and fast-moving field of cancer research. Here, once again, outstanding and original reviews are presented on a variety of topics, including platelet-derived growth factor in disease, genetic predisposition in tumor development, primary effusion lymphoma, and many more.
Cancer is not one disease, but a group of diseases in which malignant cells grow out of control and spread to other parts of the body. Eventually these cells form a visible mass or tumor. Appropriate treatment for cancer depends on what kind of cancer a person has. The type of cancer is determined by the organ the cancer starts in, the kind of cell from which it is derived, and the appearance of the cancer cells.

Advances in the Neuroscience of Addiction (Paperback): Cynthia M Kuhn, George F. Koob Advances in the Neuroscience of Addiction (Paperback)
Cynthia M Kuhn, George F. Koob
R2,250 Discovery Miles 22 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Understanding the phenomenon of long-lasting vulnerability to addiction is essential to developing successful treatments. Written by an international team of authorities in their respective fields, Advances in the Neuroscience of Addiction provides an excellent overview of the available and emerging approaches used to investigate the biologic mechanisms of drug addiction. It also delineates the promising research discoveries being made in relapse prevention. The book begins with current animal models of addiction, which mimic the state of humans entering treatment: recently-abstinent animals that receive common triggers for relapse (classical conditioning, stress, and neuroadaptive dysregulation). Coverage then shifts to the use of electrophysiologic approaches, which enable researchers to characterize the discharge patterns of single neurons during drug self-administration. After exploring advances in voltammetry and enzyme-linked biosensors for measuring glutamate, the book discusses the theoretical background and results of neuroimaging studies related to neuronal networks that are activated by drug-specific cues. It then describes modern genetic approaches to manipulate target proteins that influence addictive behavior. The book rounds out its coverage by illustrating how a neuroeconomic approach can inform studies of reward processing in general and addiction in particular. It is a comprehensive introduction to the methodologies of the field for students and beginning researchers and an essential reference source for established investigators.

The Geography of International Terrorism - An Introduction to Spaces and Places of Violent Non-State Groups (Hardcover, New):... The Geography of International Terrorism - An Introduction to Spaces and Places of Violent Non-State Groups (Hardcover, New)
Richard M. Medina, George F Hepner
R4,148 Discovery Miles 41 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While geography is not the only factor to shape human behavior, its influence on terrorists' motivations, behaviors, options, and activities is a primary consideration in understanding terrorism. Taking a different approach than many other books on terrorism, The Geography of International Terrorism: An Introduction to Spaces and Places of Violent Non-State Groups presents an accessible, cross-disciplinary approach to managing terrorism on a global scale. The authors articulate the role of physical and human geography in terrorist ideology, operations, haven formation, and control. Providing the wider perspective required for preempting and countering terrorism, the book focuses on the geographic perspective in a more explicit manner than previous treatments of the topic. The authors examine networks as global systems and discuss new geospatial technologies in counterterrorism, supplying a blend of concepts and techniques that support policy development within the governing counter terrorist community. There are hundreds of books on terrorism, but few if any focus on the influence of geography, geospatial analysis, and geospatial intelligence approaches. A combination of academic theory and practical applications, this book provides the vertical linkage between topics at the high resolution level, such as sense of place and cultural identity of a clan or tribe with regional and global geographic-scale issues critical to understanding 21st century international terrorist groups.

Ancient Alterity in the Andes - A Recognition of Others (Hardcover): George F. Lau Ancient Alterity in the Andes - A Recognition of Others (Hardcover)
George F. Lau
R4,151 Discovery Miles 41 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ancient Alterity in the Andes is the first major treatment on ancient alterity: how people in the past regarded others. At least since the 1970s, alterity has been an influential concept in different fields, from art history, psychology and philosophy, to linguistics and ethnography. Having gained steam in concert with postmodernism's emphasis on self-reflection and discourse, it is especially significant now as a framework to understand the process of 'writing' and understanding the Other: groups, cultures and cosmologies. This book showcases this concept by illustrating how people visualised others in the past, and how it coloured their engagements with them, both physically and cognitively. Alterity has yet to see sustained treatment in archaeology due in great part to the fact that the archaeological record is not always equipped to inform on the subject. Like its kindred concepts, such as identity and ethnicity, alterity is difficult to observe also because it can be expressed at different times and scales, from the individual, family and village settings, to contexts such as nations and empires. It can also be said to 'reside' just as well in objects and individuals, as it may in a technique, action or performance. One requires a relevant, holistic data set and multiple lines of evidence. Ancient Alterity in the Andes provides just that by focusing on the great achievements of the ancient Andes during the first millennium AD, centred on a Precolumbian culture, known as Recuay (AD 1-700). Using a new framework of alterity, one based on social others (e.g., kinsfolk, animals, predators, enemies, ancestral dead), the book rethinks cultural relationships with other groups, including the Moche and Nasca civilisations of Peru's coast, the Chavin cult, and the later Wari, the first Andean empire. In revealing little known patterns in Andean prehistory the book illuminates the ways that archaeologists, in general, can examine alterity through the existing record. Ancient Alterity in the Andes is a substantial boon to the analysis and writing of past cultures, social systems and cosmologies and an important book for those wishing to understand this developing concept in archaeological theory.

Qualitative Research in Technical Communication (Hardcover, New): James Conklin, George F Hayhoe Qualitative Research in Technical Communication (Hardcover, New)
James Conklin, George F Hayhoe
R4,171 Discovery Miles 41 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Addressing the explosive growth in qualitative research in recent years, this volume represents the first anthology to bring together a representative sample from this growing body of work, and comments on the reasons for the extraordinary interest in qualitative research. Contributors to the volume bring forward reports of significant, structured qualitative research into various aspects of technical communication practice, addressing the questions of what new insights researchers are generating about the working reality of today's technical communicators, and how technical communicators are perceived and treated by managers and by colleagues from other disciplines.

Including examples of qualitative methodologies-including ethnography, case study, focus groups, action research, grounded theory, and interview research- used by technical communicators to strengthen their practice, the result is a rich harmony of perspectives, as diverse as the field of technical communication itself.

This book will be of interest to to students and academics seeking up-to-date information on current industry practices in technical communication, as well as to practitioners in technical and professional communication. The book will also serve as a text in undergraduate seminars and courses at the master's level.
